The Boston Mayor’s Cup Criterium has become the fitting end of season race for New England road racing. As a downtown Criterium, it doesn’t get any more central than this with a course on roads encircling the Boston City Hall Plaza. It is great that a city like Boston has such a commitment to developing bike culture that they host an event like this right in the heart of the city. This venue is great for spectators and racers alike with a fast open course that has one climb and descent per lap.
Dave, Stan and I lined up with the primary plan of protecting Dave’s lead in the masters 40+ NEBRA trophy series. The race started fast with CT powerhouse Tim Ahern rolling off the front from the gun with two riders he quickly shed off his wheel. It became apparent that Tim was going to steamroll on to the win and we were left making sure Dave was protected and got the best placing he could.
Despite multiple efforts at attacks and breaks the rest of the pack stayed together and we all raced for second. Dave ended up finishing a strong 4th in the bunch and 5th overall to secure the points necessary to take home the NEBRA trophy. Overall it was a great day of racing to cap off a terrifically successful season for the Aetna-Expo Wheelmen with Dave’s NEBRA Trophy win as the overall crowning achievement.
